The complete capsule house buyer's guide
Everything you need to know before buying a capsule home or container house: what they are, what they cost, how delivery works and the rules where you live.
What is a capsule house?
A capsule house is a prefabricated, fully fitted home built in one piece in a factory, then shipped to your land and set down ready to use. You'll also see them called capsule homes, space capsule houses, space capsule homes or capsule pods. They're all the same idea: a compact, futuristic home with a rounded shell, panoramic glass and everything you need inside.
Unlike a traditional build, there's no foundation trench, no bricklayers and no months of disruption. The structure, insulation, wiring, plumbing, bathroom and kitchen are all finished before it leaves the factory. On site, it's placed on a simple base and connected to water, electricity and waste.
Why capsule homes are so popular
- Speed: weeks from order to delivery, not months or years.
- Cost: a fraction of the price of a traditional extension or new build.
- Design: the space capsule look photographs beautifully, which is why they do so well on Airbnb and glamping sites.
- Flexibility: they can be moved, resold or added to as your plans change.
Capsule house specs & materials
Every capsule house we sell is built around the same proven structure. Here's what goes into one and why it matters.
| Part | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Galvanised steel chassis | Strong enough to lift by crane and ship, resists rust |
| Outer shell | Aluminium alloy panels | Lightweight, weatherproof and low maintenance |
| Insulation | Insulated walls, roof and floor | Warm in winter, cool in summer, lower energy bills |
| Glazing | Tempered, insulated glass | The panoramic views, with safety and heat retention |
| Interior | Finished walls, flooring and ceiling | Ready to use from day one |
| Climate | Heating and air conditioning | Comfortable all year in any climate |
| Services | Pre-installed wiring, lighting and plumbing | You only connect the mains on site |
Sizes
Our 1 bedroom capsule house is 8.5 m long and suits one or two people. The 2 bedroom capsule house is 11.5 m long with room for a family. Both are 3.3 m wide and 3.3 m high, so they can travel by road and sea.
How much does a capsule house cost?
Our capsule houses start from $71,460 for the 1 bedroom capsule house, $90,000 for the 2 bedroom capsule house and $101,400 for the aluminium space capsule house. An expandable container house starts from $33,600. The final price depends on a few things:
- Model and size: 1 or 2 bedrooms, capsule or container.
- Options: solar panels, decking, smart controls, upgraded finishes.
- Delivery: shipping to your country and transport to your site.
- Site work: the base, crane hire and connecting water, power and waste. These are usually arranged locally.
Capsule house price vs a traditional build
A traditional extension or garden building with a bathroom and kitchen can take months and cost far more once trades, materials and delays add up. A capsule house arrives finished at a fixed price, so you know your budget from day one.
Capsule house vs container house vs tiny house
If you're comparing prefab homes, here's how the main options stack up.

What can you use a capsule house for?
Glamping pods and Airbnb
A space capsule house is one of the most eye-catching stays you can list. Guests share the photos, which brings in more bookings. Many owners start with one unit and add more as the bookings grow.
Holiday lets and resorts
Campsites, resorts and holiday parks use capsule homes to add premium units quickly, without months of construction.
Garden annex
Extra space for parents, grown-up children or guests, with their own bathroom and kitchen, right in your garden.
Farm diversification
Turn spare land into income with a few capsule pods for holiday lets.
Full-time living
With full insulation, heating and air conditioning, a capsule house is a comfortable compact home all year.
Office, studio or site cabin
A quiet home office or studio, or a container house for site accommodation, staff housing or a sales office.
Worldwide delivery & installation
We deliver capsule houses and container houses across the UK and worldwide. Here's how it works:
- Shipping: your unit is shipped by sea and then by road to your site. Your quote includes delivery to your country.
- Site access: we check access for the delivery vehicle and crane with you before shipping.
- The base: the unit sits on a simple level base, such as a concrete pad, plinths or ground screws, prepared before it arrives.
- Placement: a crane lifts the unit into place, usually in a few hours.
- Connection: a local electrician and plumber connect power, water and waste (mains drainage, septic tank or treatment plant).
Do you need planning permission for a capsule house?
It depends on where you are, the land and how you'll use it. Rules are set by your country and local authority, so always check locally before buying. Here's a general overview.
United Kingdom
- Garden annex: a unit that meets the legal definition of a caravan (mobile, within size limits) may be placed in your garden for use connected to the main house, sometimes without full planning permission. A Certificate of Lawful Development gives you certainty.
- Holiday lets and glamping: usually need planning permission, as it's a change of use of the land.
- Separate home: a new independent dwelling usually needs full planning permission.
Europe, USA, Australia and elsewhere
Most countries treat a capsule house as either a mobile unit or a building, each with its own rules. Zoning, building codes and tourist accommodation rules all vary. We'll share what other buyers in your country have done and point you to the right questions to ask locally.
Off-grid capsule house with solar panels
Want to put a capsule house somewhere without mains power? Add a solar panel package with battery storage, pair it with a water tank and a septic tank or treatment plant, and you can run fully off-grid. It's a popular choice for remote glamping sites and eco retreats.
How long does a capsule house last?
With a galvanised steel frame and aluminium shell, a capsule house is built to last for decades with basic care. Maintenance is simple:
- Clean the glass and shell a few times a year.
- Check seals around doors and windows annually.
- Service the air conditioning as you would at home.
Your capsule house is covered by our 2-year warranty.
Container houses explained
A container house is a home built from, or in the shape of, a shipping container, fitted out with insulation, windows, a bathroom and a kitchen. An expandable container house ships at standard container size, then folds out on site into a much larger living space.
- Lower cost: usually cheaper than a capsule house for the same floor area.
- Easy to ship: standard container sizes make worldwide delivery simple.
- Stackable: join or stack units for offices, staff housing or bigger homes.

Buying & price
How much does a capsule house cost?
Our capsule houses start from $71,460 for a 1 bedroom model and $90,000 for a 2 bedroom model. Your quote is fixed and includes delivery to your country.
What's included in the price?
The fully fitted unit with bathroom, kitchen area, bedroom, heating, air conditioning, insulation, glazing, lighting and wiring, plus delivery to your country. Site preparation, crane hire and connecting the mains are usually arranged locally.
How do I pay?
A 30% deposit by bank transfer starts your build. The 70% balance is due once your unit is finished, inspected and filmed, before it ships. Every amount is written into your quote.
Can I see a capsule house before buying?
Yes, on video. Before it ships we send photos and a video walkthrough of your actual unit at the factory, and we can set up a live video call from the factory floor.
Can I customise my capsule house?
Yes. You can choose from options like solar panels, decking, smart controls and finishes. For bigger changes or multi-unit projects, tell us what you need and we'll put together a package.
Delivery & installation
Do you deliver capsule houses worldwide?
Yes. We deliver capsule houses and container houses across the UK and worldwide. Your quote includes shipping to your country.
How long does delivery take?
Usually 10 to 14 weeks from order: about 30 days to build, then 4 to 8 weeks by sea depending on your country. We'll give you a delivery date with your quote.
How is a capsule house installed?
It's craned onto a level base such as a concrete pad, plinths or ground screws, then a local electrician and plumber connect power, water and waste. Placement usually takes a few hours.
What foundation does a capsule house need?
A simple level base: a concrete pad, concrete plinths or ground screws. We'll send you a site preparation checklist with the exact requirements.
Can a capsule house be moved later?
Yes. Because it's built as one complete unit, it can be lifted and moved to a new site by crane and truck.
Planning & rules
Do I need planning permission for a capsule house?
It depends on your country, your land and how you use it. Holiday lets and separate homes usually need permission, while some garden annex uses may not. We'll talk you through what usually applies before you buy, but always confirm with your local authority.
Can I put a capsule house in my garden?
In many cases, yes, especially as an annex used by your household. The rules depend on your country and local authority, so check locally first.
Can I use a capsule house as an Airbnb or glamping pod?
Yes, it's one of the most popular uses. Holiday lets usually need planning permission and must meet local short-term rental and safety rules.
Living in a capsule house
Can you live in a capsule house all year?
Yes. Every unit is insulated with heating and air conditioning, so it's comfortable in every season.
Does a capsule house have a bathroom and kitchen?
Yes. Every capsule house has a full bathroom with shower and toilet and a fitted kitchen area.
Can a capsule house run off-grid?
Yes. Add solar panels with battery storage, a water tank and a septic tank or treatment plant, and it can run fully off-grid.
How long does a capsule house last?
With a galvanised steel frame and aluminium shell, a capsule house is built to last for decades with basic care, and it's covered by our 2-year warranty.
Container houses
What's the difference between a capsule house and a container house?
A capsule house is a rounded, design-led unit with panoramic glass, built for living and premium holiday lets. A container house is a boxier, budget-friendly unit that's easy to ship and stack, ideal for homes, offices and site accommodation.
What is an expandable container house?
It's a container house that ships at standard container size, then folds out on site into a larger living space with bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen.
Are container houses cheaper than capsule houses?
Usually, yes. Container houses cost less for the same floor area, while capsule houses cost more for their design and panoramic glass.
