Everybody adores a scrunchie. What was once relegated to your ’80s Halloween costume is now seen looped around the low ponytails of street-style icons, celebs, and Instagram influencers alike.

Looking ahead to the fall season, scrunchies are still on the rise. According to a recent Pinterest research that determined the top-ranking beauty trends to watch for in 2021, scrunchies ranked first by more than 6,309 per cent. Because we’re all suffering from quarantine hair fatigue, the trend resurrection is working to our advantage now more than ever. The fabric-covered elastics are inexpensive, gentle on the hair, and widely available, with accessory manufacturers and hair firms now providing scrunchies in autumnal fabrics such as sumptuous velvet and silk ribbon.

Most likely, you’ve already gone on the scrunchie bandwagon, or you’ve considered it but aren’t sure how to style those lovely little things other than using one to keep your hair back as you wash your face at night. Don’t be concerned! We’ve got five simple ways to style your hair and incorporate the scrunchie trend that’s been popping up all over your Pinterest page.

Scrunchie: The Messy Bun

Make a messy bun with your hair and leave some shorter bang pieces out of the bun if you have them. To sit at the base of the bun, wrap a medium to big scrunchie around the top. This is a terrific look to pair with a bow scrunchie because you can style the bow in the back or front as you like.

Scrunchie: The Braided Look:

This is a really lovely look for longer hair! Gather your hair to one side and fasten with a hair tie approximately 4′′ from the bottom of your hair in a medium tight braid. Slide the hair band down an inch or so and use your fingers to “pancake” the braid by pulling the segments in opposite ways with your fingers to loosen the braid and make it appear wider. Cover the hair tie with a tiny to a medium scrunchie. Depending on whether you have bangs or layers, you can leave parts out in front or pin them back into your hair as needed.

Scrunchie: The Messy Ponytail

Arrange your hair into a medium-height messy ponytail and fasten with a normal hairband for the Messy Ponytail. Insert your fingers into the top crown of your head and pull sections of your hair looser on top to create volume, as well as some wisps of hair around your face for that messy look, and wrap your medium to large scrunchie around the ponytail. This is also a nice hairstyle to perform after applying a texturing spray to add texture to your hair.

The Topknot:

Create your topknot using our topknot tutorial (you can also add some hair extensions for more volume) and then slide a small- to medium-sized scrunchie over the knot.

The Back Twist:

Take the two pieces of hair that lie directly over your ears and twist them together (you can either do a tight twist or a more loose twist, but just try to twist them evenly). Once twisted, tie with a hairband at the rear of the head and add a scrunch over the top of the hairband. Because it can trail down the back of your hair, this is another fantastic hairstyle to place a bow or tie scrunchie on. You can either leave some hair out around your face or twist all of your hair into the hairstyle—the choice is yours!
